During the war in the early 1990s, Croatian National Guardsmen entrenched themselves on Mount Srd and besieged Dubrovnik. The cable car leading to the top and the summit cross, which was a gift from Napoleon, were completely destroyed. However, both were faithfully reconstructed after the war. Today, the summit cross is illuminated at night with a powerful spotlight and watches over Dubrovnik.

The way to the top of Srd can be done in three ways. The easiest and most comfortable way is certainly the three-minute ride up by cable car from the old town of Dubrovnik. The entrance is very close to the Ploče city gate.

The "Dubrovnik Cable Car" transports up to 30 people at a time up Sergius Mountain. From the gondola you can enjoy the overwhelming view over the brick-red roofs of Dubrovnik, the Adriatic Sea with the island of Lokrum and the impressive peaks of Herzegovina without the slightest effort.

Of course, Sergius Mountain can also be reached by car. To get there, turn off the coastal road in the Ploče district onto a small mountain road towards Bosanka. The single-lane road leads upwards in many serpentines, but there are always alternative routes. After about half of the way up, you will already have a fantastic view of Dubrovnik.

The third option for all sporty visitors to Dubrovnik is the approximately one and a half hour hiking trail up the Srd. This starts at the intersection of Petra Bakica ulica and Jadranska magistrala and also leads up the mountain in serpentines. In any case, always turn around once in a while and enjoy the fantastic view!

Tip: If you think you're lost, just look for the radio mast visible from afar at the top of Srd - it marks the destination and is hard to miss.

Besides the fabulous view of Dubrovnik, you can also educate yourself historically on Mount Srd. In the ruins of Fort Imperial from the early 19th century, an impressive exhibition with weapons, photographs and maps tells the story of the Yugoslav war from 1991 to 1995.

The actual extent of the destruction of Dubrovnik at that time can be understood from the pictures. Memorial stones on the Srd commemorate fallen soldiers. The remains of some trenches can still be seen "live" from the Srd.
