Emergence of the KUNS HAUS WIEN

The museum building was created from an old furniture factory dating from 1892 and was rebuilt between 1989 and 1991. The opening took place on 9 April 1991, the same year that the nearby Hundertwasser Village was opened. As with the Hundertwasser House not far away, Hundertwasser collaborated with the architect Peter Pelikan on the design of the KUNST HAUS WIEN.
Visit to KUNST HAUS WIEN

Even from afar, the colourfully decorated façade of KUNST HAUS WIEN catches the eye, for the museum itself was also designed by the artist himself. As is typical for Hundertwasser, the windows and pillars of the house are brimming with glazed mosaic stones and colourful ceramics. There are neither painted nor built straight lines, even the floor in KUNST HAUS WIEN is uneven.
Following Hundertwasser's principle that the horizontal surfaces of our planet should belong to nature, the KUNST HAUS WIEN is greened all over with plants. One side of the entire façade, for example, is glazed to provide the plants inside with sufficient daylight, and the museum shop and restaurant on the ground floor resemble a secluded winter garden.
Art exhibition on the upper floors

The actual Hundertwasser exhibition begins on the upper floor, which can be reached via an equally uneven spiral staircase. Here you can marvel at the paintings, photos and models of the works of the famous artist, whose real name, by the way, is "Friedensreich Stowasser". On the exhibition area of 1,600 square metres in total, works by other artists are also repeatedly presented on the third and fourth floors.
The cross-section through his life expresses not only his artistic work, but also his philosophy and his ecological commitment.
Tip: With the Hundertwasser House in Kegelgasse, only 400 metres away, you can admire an original architectural work by the artist.
